Summary
Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the USS Enterprise plant a tracker on a Gorn ship that captured security chief La'An Noonien-Singh, Dr. Joseph M'Benga, pilot Erica Ortegas, xenoanthropologist Sam Kirk, and many human colonists. Despite orders from Starfleet to stay in Federation space, Admiral Robert April allows the Enterprise to follow the tracker. Using engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott's Gorn transponder device to go undetected, they find an uncharted binary star system which hides the Gorn homeworld and a large invasion force. Using the Gorn's sensitivity to stellar activity, they trigger a long hibernation cycle by creating an artificial coronal mass ejection. La'An, M'Benga, Ortegas, and Sam escape with transporter codes for the colonists, enabling the Enterprise to rescue them. Ortegas is wounded during the escape, and the Enterprise suffers extensive damage.
